At VA Business Services, we work closely with a wide range of businesses, providing professional bookkeeping, accounts and business support. We're looking for a proactive and organised Bookkeeper & Accounts Assistant to join our team and play an important role in delivering an excellent service to our clients.

This is a hands-on role where you'll manage bookkeeping for a portfolio of clients, assist with VAT returns and accounts preparation, and provide general accounts support. You'll also have the opportunity to get involved in the day-to-day running of the practice and occasionally support wider business activities.

The Role

Working as part of our close-knit team, you'll be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records and supporting clients with their bookkeeping requirements. No two days are the same, and you'll work with a variety of businesses across different sectors.

  • Managing bookkeeping for a portfolio of clients using QuickBooks, Xero and LimeBooks.

  • Maintaining accurate financial records and completing bank reconciliations.

  • Preparing and assisting with VAT returns.

  • Assisting with year-end accounts preparation and other accounts support.

  • Supporting clients with bookkeeping and accounting software queries.

  • Ensuring all work is completed accurately and within deadlines.

Administration

  • Supporting the smooth day-to-day running of the practice.

  • Managing documentation and maintaining organised filing systems.

  • Welcoming clients and visitors in a professional and friendly manner.

  • Providing general administrative support to the team.

Business Support

  • Providing occasional assistance with client communications, marketing activities and business events when required.

About You

We're looking for someone who enjoys bookkeeping, takes pride in producing accurate work and enjoys building positive relationships with clients.

Ideally, you'll have:

  • AAT Level 2 qualification or equivalent.

  • A minimum of two years' commercial bookkeeping experience (additional experience is welcomed).

  • Experience using accounting software such as Xero, QuickBooks or similar cloud-based systems.

  • Experience assisting with VAT returns and accounts preparation.

  • Excellent attention to detail and a high level of accuracy.

  • Strong organisational and time management skills.

  • Good communication skills and a professional, client-focused approach.

You'll also be someone who:

  • Can work independently and manage your own workload.

  • Is dependable, trustworthy and takes ownership of your work.

  • Enjoys working as part of a supportive team.

  • Has a positive attitude and is willing to learn and develop.

  • Enjoys variety and supporting clients across different industries.

Additional Requirements

  • Full UK driving licence.

  • Willingness to travel occasionally to client sites using a company vehicle.

  • Experience within, or an understanding of, the farming or countryside sector would be advantageous.

  • A supportive and collaborative working environment.

  • Career development within a growing practice.

  • A business that values quality, teamwork and excellent client service.
